Mecanum wheel/movement

The MECANUM wheel

The MECANUM wheel forms the basis for the surface manoeuvrability of the MC-Drive materials handling units:
The MECANUM wheel consists of a wheel rim fitted with loosely mounted convex rollers at an angle of 45 degrees. These rollers provide an optimal full circle around the circumference of the wheel.
Each wheel is driven separately by electric motors. Two force components are produced at each wheel due to the location of the individual wheels relative to each other and the actuation of each individual wheel in terms of rotation direction and speed. These force components are compensated by the frame on the one hand, and are combined to produce the resulting direction of travel on the other hand.

Movement

The result is complete surface manoeuvrability - movements in the longitudinal and lateral direction can be combined with rotational movements about a variety of points along the vehicle longitudinal axis. All movements such as straight-ahead travel, sidewards travel, cornering or rotations about the vehicle centre point or, for example, about the rear axle are controlled with a 3-axis joystick.
The position of the steering point can be freely selected to meet requirements.
